Our Local 9/11 Memorial

863 N. Woods Ave., Fullerton, California

The Townley family of Fullerton and their volunteers have erected a very heartfelt memorial to those who perished twenty years ago on 9/11.  There are hundreds of very carefully placed, personalized flags, crosses, and display boards on both the front and side yards of the Townley home.  There is almost no empty space left.  The Townley family has offered this memorial to the public for many years.

One of the men working there told me that it takes twelve hours each for fourteen volunteers to create the elaborate display. This Saturday a memorial service, beginning at 8:30 am and concluding at 12:45 pm, will be held in the street in front of the house.  People are expected to come and go as their schedules allow.

Here are a few pictures of the memorial.

Notice that each handmade cross constructed by Mr. Townley bears the name of a firefighter who perished.
Each flag bears the name of someone who perished.
The Townleys have researched the 9/11 statistics and placed the information in binders for the public to page through.
These boards with so many faces give meaning to the numbers in the binder above. In the foreground is a bubbling fountain.

Unfortunately, we can’t undo what happened on 9/11.  We can honor the memory, though, of those who perished.  Perhaps your community has a local memorial that you could visit as well.

  1. Thanks Karleen for bringing this memorial to our attention . . and giving us some time to remember and reflect on 9/11. Like other tragedies – I can remember exactly where I was that morning. And I also remember seeing no airplanes in the skies over the following week. . . . very different.
    Thanks,
    Jim

    1. Yes, I remember that I was on my way to work, turning from Harbor Blvd. onto Lambert when I heard the first announcement on the radio. I remember thinking that I hadn’t heard the news correctly.
